Knowing His name

Knowing His Name: A Journey of Intimacy with God

In the Bible, names carry deep meaning and significance. They are more than mere labels; they reflect identity, purpose, and destiny. The same is true when it comes to the name of God. To truly know His name is to enter into a personal, intimate relationship with Him, one that transforms how we see Him, ourselves, and the world around us.

What’s in a Name?
In Exodus 3:14, when God called Moses to deliver the Israelites from Egypt, Moses asked, "Who shall I say sent me?" God's response was profound: "I AM WHO I AM." This divine name, Yahweh, reveals God's eternal nature, His unchanging and self-sufficient character. To know God by this name is to trust in His sovereignty and reliability. He is not a distant deity but an ever-present help, unshakable and faithful.

Throughout Scripture, God reveals Himself through various names, each reflecting a different aspect of His character. He is Jehovah Jireh—our Provider (Genesis 22:14), Jehovah Rapha—our Healer (Exodus 15:26), Jehovah Shalom—our Peace (Judges 6:24). Each name invites us to experience Him in a unique and personal way.

Knowing Him Through His Names
Knowing God's name is not about having intellectual knowledge. It’s about experiencing Him deeply in our lives. When we call Him by these names, we are proclaiming His power and presence in specific areas of our lives.

- Jehovah Jireh: When we find ourselves in seasons of lack or uncertainty, we can trust that God will provide. His name reassures us that He sees our needs before we do and will supply all that we require.

- Jehovah Rapha: Whether we are facing physical illness or emotional wounds, calling on this name affirms that God is not only able to heal but desires to restore us fully.

- Jehovah Shalom: In a world filled with anxiety, stress, and conflict, knowing God as our peace gives us rest. We are reminded that His peace surpasses all understanding and can guard our hearts and minds (Philippians 4:7).

The Power of Calling His Name
There is power in knowing and calling upon the name of God. Proverbs 18:10 declares, "The name of the Lord is a fortified tower; the righteous run to it and are safe." His name is a place of refuge, a source of strength and protection in times of trouble.

Calling on His name is not a formula, but a declaration of faith and trust. When we call upon Abba, Father, we are recognizing that we are His beloved children, and He is a loving Father who cares for us. When we declare El Shaddai, we are reminding ourselves that He is Almighty, able to do exceedingly more than we could ask or imagine (Ephesians 3:20).

Walking in the Knowledge of His Name
To truly know His name is to walk in relationship with Him. It’s to trust in His character, rely on His promises, and experience His presence in our daily lives. Jesus, in John 17:3, says, "Now this is eternal life: that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent." Knowing God’s name is not just about what He can do for us, but about entering into a life-changing relationship with Him through Jesus.

In the book of Revelation, we are given a glimpse of the future where those who overcome will have His name written on them (Revelation 3:12). This signifies complete belonging and identity in Christ. It’s a reminder that our ultimate purpose is found in knowing Him fully and being known by Him.

A Call to Know Him
As Christians, we are invited to go deeper in our relationship with God by knowing His name. It’s not a casual acquaintance but a profound, life-altering experience. As we grow in understanding who He is—Provider, Healer, Peace, Father, Almighty—we begin to see our lives through the lens of His love and faithfulness.

In every season, may we seek to know His name more intimately, and in doing so, find the strength, peace, and joy that only He can provide.

“Those who know your name trust in you, for you, Lord, have never forsaken those who seek you.” — Psalm 9:10.
